It is not an easy decision to go from two incomes to one. But, in the interest of the children, many parents decide to leave one parent at home once the kids start coming. It is quite an adjustment, but you can do it if you have a mind to.

There are many reasons that one parent will leave the workforce, but it is most likely because of the children. Working long hours can take time away from family responsibilities. Before you know it, your kids are grown up and you have missed their special moments. Some parents do not want to take the chance that this will happen to them.

It is hard to slim down to one income when you have the same expenses as you did before. So, how can the stay-at-home parent contribute while being available for the kids? Whether they are infants, preschoolers or teenagers, other activities can be managed with the kids around.

The advantage that a stay-at-home parent has is time. Yes, you will be busy with household responsibilities, but you will also have time to affect change in your family that can reduce costs and/or help increase income.

The first trick to having more money is to reduce expenses. Now that you are at home, you can start with meals. If you’ve ever had a teenager, you know that they will eat you out of house and home. The best way to get ahead is to prepare meals at home. Fix lunches for the kids and your working spouse. Create meals that are both healthy and tasty so your family won’t want to eat anywhere else.

Grocery shopping takes time, and you now have a little more of it. Before the trip, though, get your ducks in a row. Clip and organize coupons according to the store you are visiting. Buy store brand when you can. Sometimes the taste is not the same but more often than not, the store brand products are just as good. But, if the family won’t eat it, don’t buy it.

Save on the clothing bill. If you are handy with a needle and thread or a sewing machine (this includes fathers too), you can mend clothing, let out hems and help items go a longer way before needing to be replaced.

One line item on a family budget is entertainment. It can include everything from eating dinner out to visiting the movies to going to a concert. You don’t have to cut out entertainment to tighten the wallet.

Institute a family game night.
Paying a one-time fee on board games or a Wii is money better spent than going out. Also, make a take-out style meal and rent movies. Netflix has no late fees and you can create your own renting plan.

There are ways to condense your expenses when you slim down your income. Stay-at-home parents can contribute more than you know to that end.
